Nursing Practice Placements
Information about nursing practice placements for practice supervisors, practice assessors and academic assessors.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) (2018) published standards for student supervision and assessment that introduced three new roles to support student practice learning. These are: practice supervisor, practice assessor and academic assessor. Together they will support the learning, supervision and assessment of students in practice. These new standards apply to all York St John University's pre-registration nursing programmes.

Allocated to a student for each part of the programme. Conducts practice assessments based on observations of your practice and feedback from practice supervisors and service users. |
Practice supervisor |
Practice based. Registered nurse or health care professional. |
Works with a student in hub and spoke placements. Helps students to set learning goals, facilitates learning opportunities, provides feedback on student performance in the Practice Assessment Document. |
Academic assessor | University based. |
Allocated to a student for each part of the programme. Oversees practice learning, works in partnership with students and practice assessors, contributes assessment decisions. Works in partnership with the practice assessor to evaluate and recommend the student for progression for each part of the programme. |
Practice learning facilitator/co-ordinator | Practice based. | Has dedicated responsibility for practice learning of undergraduate student nurses across an organisation |
Learning environment manager | Practice based. | Has dedicated responsibility for practice learning of undergraduate student nurses within their ward/unit environment. |
The academic assessor will oversee student placement learning from the university. They will discuss progress with the student and the practice assessor. Practitioners cannot be the practice supervisor and practice assessor for the same student.
