If you choose to study full time the course will take 1 year to complete. You will study 5 compulsory modules.

You can find out which modules are available in each term in the Course Specifications.
Modules
Credits: 30
Compulsory
On this module you will focus on soil, water, and ecological sciences within the context of sustainable environment and resource management. Understanding the key processes which underpin these systems is imperative to developing effective and sustainable management practices. This module involves field and laboratory work, and data analysis techniques studied in the accompanying module.
Credits: 30
Compulsory
Quantitative data analysis is essential for environmental management. From using statistical tools to quantify characteristics of an environment, to providing evidence for decision making; being able to understand data and apply analytical techniques to it is key.
This module will equip you with the fundamental skills necessary to analyse, interpret and critically evaluate environmental data. Through theory and practice of statistics and GIS (Geographic Information System), you will learn to apply a range of techniques to answer scientific questions using real datasets, while recognising assumptions or limitations of approaches used.
You will develop the technical skills required to produce effective visuals (graphs and maps) to communicate key scientific results using appropriate software. The skills learned will support you in planning and undertaking independent investigations as part of your studies, and are directly transferable to employment.
Credits: 30
Compulsory
This module will provide you with an essential foundation in environmental assessment, focusing on key tools such as Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Strategic Environmental Appraisal (SEA), which are central to the professional practice of sustainable development. Integrating environmental assessment with development planning, policies, and decision-making, this module fosters interdisciplinary skills.
Through case studies, GIS-based analysis, and interaction with industry professionals, you will explore both theoretical understanding and practical applications. This will prepare you for career pathways by developing technical, analytical, and decision-support skills critical for assessing and mitigating environmental impacts.
Credits: 30
Compulsory
Develop your understanding of the research process, from design through to implementation and application. You will be required to produce a literature review in the early part of this module to shape your dissertation research idea. During the module we will address research design and implementation, including considerations of quality and integrity. We then look at critical perspectives on the practices and applications of science, considering how these are relevant to your proposed research.
Credits: 60
Compulsory
Develop your own specialist knowledge by producing an independent piece of research on a topic of your choice, guided by an academic adviser. Your research should investigate a contemporary issue or challenge in environmental management and sustainability. Apply the academic skills developed during your course of study, enhancing your capacity for independent working, autonomy, self-reliance and project management.
