Live and learn in the UK

Learning in a new country with a different culture helps you see the world in different ways and give you new opportunities.

Over half a million international students choose the UK each year.  UK universities are among the best in the world.  A  globally recognised qualification from us can enhance your career.

Our university is in the centre of one of the best UK city's to live, study and discover British history and culture.  Our wide choice of course options means you can gain qualifications quickly and without unnecessary financial expense.

What we offer you

There are many reasons to make us your choice of British University.  Here are five of our favourites:

  • In the UK's annual national student survey we are in the top 30 universities for overall student satisfaction.
  • 97% of our students are employed or in education within six months of graduating.
  • York has been named the best UK city to live in (Sunday Times 2018).
  • All international students are guaranteed university owned accommodation.
  • When you complete your degree you will graduate in York Minster, one of the most famous Cathedrals in the world.

Alongside this, we offer excellent support to international students from a dedicated team that understands your needs and situation.  As we are a smaller university, with approximately 6500 students on campus, you'll quickly get to know familiar faces and be taught by tutors who know you by name.

The City of York

York has something for everybody. If you want to explore British heritage you'll be at the heart of a city famous for its Roman ruins, Viking history, magnificent Minster Cathedral and year round Festivals. If you prefer to shop York has a unique mix of major retailers and independent stores.

For going out and mixing with friends, York offers theatres and cinemas, cafes and bars, a fun friendly and safe nightlife and lots of traditional English pubs! As a smaller city than many in the UK it's easy to get around and you'll quickly settle in. The city has a good record on student safety and a strong sense of community.

York is also very well connected to other parts of our country. Major cities including London, Leeds, Manchester, Birmingham and Edinburgh are all a direct train journey away, with Manchester International Airport less than two hours away.

York is located in the centre of the county of North Yorkshire, which means that the coast and beach, English countryside and world-famous attractions are all nearby.

What it costs to study and live here

We charge a tuition fee to study our courses.  You can find the fee you will need to pay on the page for each individual course, the fee for international students depends on whether you are from within or outside the EU.

York is a reasonably priced city to live in. University accommodation costs between £100 and £162 per week.  Food can be brought from a range of places around the city with prices for different budgets and specialist food stores for different cultures.  Many places in the city offer discounts for students, including reduced costs for travel and leisure activities.

As an international student living in the UK, the UK Home Office requires you to have £1015 per month in your bank account. These funds are for your general living expenses including accommodation, local travel, food and entertainment. They are in addition to your tuition fees.

You need to show that you have enough funds to live on for the duration of your course (up to nine months) and that you've had the money for at least 28 days.

We offer help and advice to enable you to make your study in the UK more affordable, this can include help to find part-time work if you are studying on an eligible Tier 4 Visa.  We also offer scholarships to certain students to cover all or part of the cost of your studies.
