Our Cambridge University English Assessment accredited course gives you the skills to teach English anywhere in the world.

This Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) course will help you start your teaching career in the UK or around the world. The certificate is awarded by Cambridge Assessment English, which is part of Cambridge University. It is the gold standard qualification that 4 out of 5 employers ask for when hiring to English teaching roles. You will gain experience, expertise and recognition beyond what you would receive on other similar courses.

Course information

Who is this course for?

This CELTA course is for anyone who is thinking of teaching English to speakers of other languages, and would like to boost their career potential in this area by gaining a widely recognised and highly respected qualification.

Fee reductions are available to York St John University staff, students and alumni, but this course is also available to the general public, and several different flexible learning options are available.

Some students on courses within the School of Education, Language and Psychology will be encouraged to study for the CELTA qualification alongside their degree, at no additional cost. Find out if this applies to you by emailing celta@yorksj.ac.uk.

What will I learn?

We will give you the training and experience you need to confidently teach English to speakers of other languages. This includes guided teaching practice with adult learners of English either in person, or online via Zoom. You do not need any teaching experience to study with us, but if you have taught before, you can still learn a great deal and develop many new skills on this course. We will give you the techniques and confidence you need to begin teaching. As soon as you complete the course, you will be prepared to apply for jobs around the world. Whatever your ambitions and motivations for taking the CELTA course, we can help you become the best teacher you can be.

How will I be taught?

You will receive at least 120 hours of contact time. This will include:

  • Tutorial support and consultation
  • Supervised lesson planning
  • 6 hours of assessed teaching followed by feedback
  • Peer observation of teaching
  • Observation of experienced teachers in the classroom.
  • You will also be expected to dedicate time to extra reading, assignment writing and lesson planning.

How will I be assessed?

You will be assessed in 3 ways on the CELTA course:

  • Teaching practice - you will complete 6 hours in total, working with 2 ability levels
  • Written assignments - you will complete 4 in total
  • Participation in classes and observations

There is no final exam, and assessment is continuous. You will need to pass your teaching practice and written assignments to complete the course.

Course structure

How you will study

This course consists of 5 modules.

Each module explores a different aspect of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

Within each module you will study different subjects in detail, which you will then to your guided and assessed teaching sessions.

Modules

On this module you will cover:

  • Cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds
  • Motivations for learning English as an adult
  • Learning and teaching preferences
  • Context for learning and teaching English
  • Varieties of English
  • Multilingualism and the role of first languages

On this module you will cover:

  • Basic concepts and terminology used in English language teaching (ELT) to discuss language form and use
  • Grammatical frameworks: rules and conventions relating to words, sentences, paragraphs and texts
  • Lexis: word formation, meaning and use in context
  • Phonology: the formation and description of English phonemes; features of connected speech
  • The practical significance of similarities and differences between languages
  • Reference materials for language awareness
  • Key strategies and approaches for developing learners’ language knowledge

On this module you will:

  • Study the basic concepts and terminology used for describing reading, listening, speaking and writing skills
  • Examine the purpose of these skills and what barriers there might be to learning them
  • Consider key strategies and approaches for developing learners’ receptive and productive skills

In this module you will cover:

  • Principles of planning for effective teaching of adult learners of English
  • Lesson planning for effective teaching of adult learners of English
  • Evaluation of lesson planning
  • The selection, adaptation and evaluation of materials and resources in planning (including computer and other technology-based resources)
  • Knowledge of commercially produced resources and non-published materials and classroom resources for teaching English to adults

In this module you will cover:

  • The effective organisation of the classroom
  • Classroom presence and control
  • Teacher and learner language
  • The use of teaching materials and resources
  • Practical skills for teaching at a range of levels
  • The monitoring and evaluation of learning
  • Evaluation of the teaching/learning process
  • Professional development: responsibilities and support systems

Course dates

Full time online

You can participate in this full time online course wherever you are in the world. Teaching practice and learning are at fixed times during the day. Both of these are delivered through Zoom.

Duration: 5 weeks

Contact time: Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 6.00pm

Start dates:

  • 12 August to 13 September 2024

Full time face to face

This full time study option lets you complete the course in a month. Teaching will take place in person on our York campus. It's perfect if you have no other commitments and want to get your qualification quickly and locally.

Duration: 4.5 or 5 weeks

Contact time: Monday to Friday, 10.00am to 6.00pm

Start dates:

  • 13 May to 14 June 2024
  • 24 June to 24 July 2024 (finishing on Wednesday) Please note that these dates are currently full but please get in touch and we can place you on a waiting list.
  • 7 October to 6 November 2024 (finishing on Wednesday)

Part time online learning

You can study this version of the course anywhere in the world. The part time study option allows you to fit other work or life commitments around your workload.

Duration: 12 weeks

Contact time: Saturdays (10.00am to 5.00pm) for Input, Teaching practices Tuesdays and Thursdays (5.30pm to 9.00pm)

  • 13 February to 2 May 2024

Entry requirements

Requirements

To join the CELTA course, you must:

  • Be over 18 years old
  • Speak English as your first language, or if English is an additional language you should be at a high C1 or above in the CEFR
  • Have qualifications equivalent to those needed for higher education

You will also need:

  • The potential to become an effective English language teacher
  • The ability to complete written assignments
  • The ability to deliver assessed teaching sessions

Fees and funding

Paying your tuition fees

If your application is successful, you will need to:

  • Pay a £250 deposit to secure your place - this must be done within 2 weeks of receiving your offer
  • Pay the remaining balance 2 weeks before your course starts - the exact amount will be confirmed in your acceptance letter

Please note we cannot refund tuition fees for early departure or absence from the course.

Fee reductions

York St John University staff, current students and alumni will receive a 10% reduction on tuition fees.

Current York St John University students who are studying in the School of Education, Language and Psychology may be able to take the CELTA course for free. Course leader biographies

Simon Marshall

Simon has been working as a language teacher and teacher trainer for almost 40 years. Before joining York St John University in 2013 he held a series of senior posts in highly respected organisations, including the British Council, International House and Pilgrims, Canterbury. He has taught and trained in more than 30 countries, published numerous articles on teaching methodology, and has extensive experience of presenting at international conferences.

Jessica Mosley

Jessica has been a teacher since 2003 and a CELTA trainer since 2016. She has worked in countries such as Taiwan, Italy, Hong Kong as well as the UK, teaching a range of age groups and contexts. She has worked for organisations such as International House and the British Council, and held a variety of management positions, all involving the management and development of teachers. She has been a CELTA trainer at York St John University since 2019.

Laura Khaddi

Laura has been an English language teacher for 17 years, and has taught in Russia, France, Morocco and the UK. She has worked with learners aged from 3 to over 70 at all levels, and, and has taught at York St John University since 2009. As well as teaching General English classes open to all learners, she has extensive experience working with learners developing their academic English, or learning English to settle in the UK. She became a CELTA tutor in 2021.

If your application is successful, we will invite you to an interview.

The interview will:

  • Last for approximately 1 hour
  • Include a short error correction task

You may be interviewed in pairs or groups. We can offer online interviews if you cannot attend in person.
