Free English Classes

These classes are open to everyone over the age of 18, with the exception of beginners and very advanced students.

Our English classes are taught by trainee teachers and take place online using Zoom or in person at the York St John University campus. They are free for everyone and you can attend as many classes as you like. Wherever you are in the world, log on and join in. If you are based in or around York, please join us for fun and interactive lessons and the chance to meet other English language learners.

Study Level

If you are looking to develop your English language skills, these classes are ideal for you. Unfortunately, this course is not suitable if you are an absolute beginner or have advanced knowledge of the English language.

We offer classes for the following levels:

  • A2 level (lower)
  • B2+ level (higher)

You can use the British Council free online test to find out what level you are currently at. 

Dates for study

Classes are held either on campus here in York, or online via Zoom.

Classes take place Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 12.30pm to 2.30pm (UK time).

On campus classes:

  • 26 May to 24 June 2022
  • 4 July to 29 July 2022

Online classes:

  • 8 August to 9 September 2022

To register for these courses, email us at CELTA@yorksj.ac.uk, telling us:

  • The dates you are interested in
  • Your level of English

We will then email you details of how you can join the class.

Please be aware that to join Zoom lessons, you will need a computer or tablet and a good internet connection.  

To register for online classes: 

There is a maximum of 10 spaces for each online class, so please only book the classes you can attend.

Once you have booked onto a class, we will email you a link to the lesson.

Please come to De Grey reception (Lord Mayor’s Walk) at 12.20pm to register on the day you would like to attend.
