Support for mature students

Find out more about the support we offer to help you return to learning.

Students listen to a tutor during a lecture.

If you are starting university after a break from formal education, we offer tailored support for you.

Students returning to study after being out of education for 3 years or more are classed as mature students. Mature students are often over 21 when they begin their undergraduate degree.

Many of our students are mature students, and we have an outstanding record of supporting those students to achieve academic success.

Mature student events

If you are over 21 and have applied for a place at York St John, you will be invited to join one of our mature student events.

These events take place on campus. They are a great chance to meet and network with fellow mature applicants and students. You can tour our campus, chat to support teams from across the University and learn more about the services we offer to mature students.

Future events and booking details will be shared on this page soon.

Mature entry offer scheme

Our mature student entry scheme takes into account non-traditional qualifications and experience. It enables us to welcome people with a passion for learning and a real determination to succeed.

If you have you been out of education for at least 3 years but hold a GCSE English Language at Grade C or an equivalent, this scheme could work for you.

Apply online or contact us to talk about your options. Learn more on our mature entry offer scheme page.

Mature entry offer scheme

As a mature student looking for a change in career I felt quite anxious about fitting in with younger people on the course. However I needn’t have been because I made some brilliant friends and we helped and supported each other through the three years.

Our mature learners bring fresh ideas to our campus. They have useful life experience which enhances learning for everyone.
