Certificate in Primary School Physical Education Specialism Level 5

This 6 day course, developed by AfPE and Sports Leaders UK, will provide you with a professional qualification and the knowledge, skills and confidence to deliver outstanding PE.

This is a recognised qualification that aims to upskill primary school teachers and higher level teaching assistants to improve the overall delivery of the physical education curriculum within primary schools. On successful completion of this qualification, delegates will be able to assist in raising the standards within primary school physical education teaching and learning.

How long is the programme?

45 tutored guided learning hours and 96 independent learning hours, including the completion of individual learning tasks. The guided learning hours will take place on 5 full days of tutor led delivery at York St John University, which will include practical activity and classroom based theory. Although you will be expected to carry out some work within your own time, additional release time will be needed for some of the tasks, including a half day prior to the course to complete a pre-course task and a half day to complete final assessment tasks.

How will I be assessed?

Course assessment will be a mixture of formal written assignments, group based tasks and group discussion. You will also be required to arrange two observations of your PE teaching by a colleague or senior leader within your own school during the course.

This is a degree level qualification and you will need to attend all of the contact days below in addition to completing tasks in between these sessions.

The first day is a welcome event where we will introduce you to the course and we also cover some of the content in this first session.

The further five contact days will have a registration at 8.45am for a prompt start at 9.00am and will finish no later than 5.00pm. Please note, as the course has a minimum teaching hours requirement, you will need to be able to commit to all six contact days in full.

Further qualifications

There is also an optional 2 day bolt on to include the Level 6 in Primary PE Leadership costing an additional £200 per delegate. Please enquire for details.

Course leader biographies

Simon Kumar – centre course manager and tutor/assessor - graduated from York St John University with a first class degree in (BA) Sports Studies. After completing a Masters in Practitioner Research, Simon is now undertaking a Professional Doctorate of Education. After teaching in primary education as a teacher specialising in Physical Education for a number of years, Simon became a lecturer at York St John University in 2015. Simon also has a background in disability sport development, personal training, sports coaching, secondary school sport development and the Armed Forces, and was the founder of inclusive sport at York St John University.

Lindsay Spicer – tutor/assessor - graduated from York St John University in 2001 with a (BA) Physical Education and completed a PGCE in Physical Education at Durham University. After teaching in secondary education as a Teacher of Physical Education, including coordinating primary school sport, Lindsay then worked for over 10 years in sports development as a project development officer and sports coach, then later as a trainer/assessor in first aid. Lindsay now works at York St John University developing CPD opportunities for professionals.
