I am a Lecturer in Criminology and Police Studies. My research interests broadly cover crime and harm in deindustrialised working-class locales, consumer culture, policing in austerity and partnership working. I teach predominantly in these areas across the Criminology BA (Hons), Criminology with Police Studies BA (Hons) and Criminology MSc, but also less frequently on the Law and Social Sciences Foundation Year and  Sociology with Criminology BA (Hons).

Prior to joining York St John University, I studied at Teesside University for my undergraduate (2011) and Masters degree (2014) in Criminology. Continuing at Teesside I started a PhD investigating police partnerships working in austerity (2015), before joining York St John in 2019.

Teaching

I teach on a variety of modules across multiple courses. Currently, this involves:

  • Crime and Deviance in the Contemporary World
  • Crime and the Economy
  • The Culture of Contemporary Policing
  • Social Justice, Communities and Partnerships
  • Cultural Criminology
  • Issues in Criminal Justice
  • Contemporary Issues in Law and Social Science
  • Advanced Research Methods

Research

My PhD was an ethnographic study exploring the impact of austerity cuts on police partnerships within the thematic areas of local policing and protecting vulnerable people. This covered themes such as police culture, moral economy and political economy.

Future research interests involve exploring social and criminological issues in deindustrialised working-class locales, such as work, inequality, violence and abuse.
