Staff Profile

Steven Poulton

Senior Lecturer, Paramedic Science

I've been a Paramedic for a number of years working with Yorkshire Ambulance Service, currently continue practicing with the trust. Having worked through Covid, in late 2020 our first child was born, wanting to improve my work/life balance I took a lateral step into education becoming a Lecturer at another University. Wanting to further challenge myself I took the role of Senior Lecturer at York St John. Living local, working at YSJ offers me the exciting prospect of training the next generation of Paramedics who'll continue practicing within the County. I currently work on the MSc in Paramedic Science and look forward to cementing YSJ as the University for North Yorkshire in this profession.

Outside of work I am an avid Scuba Diving Instructor, I guess education runs through me, however I've been very spoilt to dive in some of the most beautiful places on Earth.

Teaching

Whilst in clinical practice I become a practice educator assisting in the development of students whilst working on the ambulance. I further developed and became a Lecturer before challenging myself and taking on the next step of becoming a Senior Lecturer at YSJ. I currently hold a PG cert in Academic Educator along with two degrees, the first in Media Communication and the 2nd in Enhanced Pre-hospital Assessment. Whilst obtaining my PG cert I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and will soon continue and develop this into a Senior Fellow.

I currently teach on the following:

  • Course: L7 MSc Paramedic Science
  • Modules: Clinical Care
  • Modules: Concepts of physical and mental health

Research

Presently my research activities have mainly been involvement whilst in clinical practice however I was able to be apart of a rapid review looking at the Delivery of Public Health Intervention by the Ambulance sector.
