What is ASCEND?

ASCEND is a Learning Analytics system that will create an engagement score based on your interactions with university resources such as Moodle or Printing.  The resulting engagement score will give you a better idea of how your learning is progressing and should empower you to take control of your own learning. It also enables your academic tutor to have meaningful conversations with you about how we might better support you to achieve your goals and full potential at York St John.

Why should I use ASCEND?

ASCEND aims to enhance your academic tutor meetings and provide you with an improved experience. It is designed to support you through your studies, highlight areas that you may wish to focus on to increase your potential achievements and give an opportunity to share and celebrate success.

Is my personal data safe?

Your personal data will be subject to strict security procedures and compliant with GDPR.  Only staff that have a requirement to support you will view your information.

What is the engagement score?

This indicates your engagement level with the university digital resources.

How is the engagement score calculated?

Engagement is calculated based on a number of different interactions with the University. More detailed information is available on the student guide [on the website?]

What do the High or Good engagement ratings mean?

Ratings of High and Good mean that there has been frequent access to York St John systems (e.g. Moodle Forum Posts, Moodle Quizzes or Printing). 

What does the Partial, Low or Very Low engagement ratings mean?

This means your engagement with York St John systems is less frequent. You can use your engagement information to get support from your tutors. 

What does the None rating mean?

This means there is no data to work out an engagement rating for you. If you are using the resources, then contact your tutor so they can investigate further.

Why is my engagement rating important?

There is strong correlation between engagement and achievement. Though engagement does not guarantee success, evidence from other universities has shown it is an important factor in success. 

How can I improve my engagement rating?

How often is the engagement rating updated?

The calculation is done every night to provide a daily engagement rating. You can also choose a date range to check your engagement for specific times.

What happens out of term time or when I am on placement?

Your engagement rating will reduce but that’s ok as this is expected.
