Returning to university accommodation

Some students may be eligible to return to university accommodation after first year.

So that we are able to guarantee accommodation for first year students, we are generally required to significantly limit the number of returning students we can accept back into our accommodation.

We have a process in place to allow students who meet the eligibility criteria outlined in clause 9.4 of the 2021/22 Allocation Policy to apply. Students in the following groups are eligible to apply:

  • Students who require physically adapted rooms which cannot be accessed in the private sector.
  • Students with visual impairments (with or without assistance dogs).
  • Students on the autism spectrum who cannot be provided with appropriate support to live in non-University accommodation.
  • Care leavers and estranged students who are unable to obtain a guarantor for private accommodation.

Applications for returning students for the 2022/23 academic year opened on 7 December and closed on 22 December. To apply to return to University provided accommodation, you had to meet the specific eligibility criteria outlined in the Allocation Policy and apply by the deadline.

We cannot accept any further returning student applications for the 2022 academic year.

If you have not been able to find accommodation yet, we recommend that you refer to our House Hunting pages for helpful advice and information about looking for private accommodation in York. You can also join our Facebook group to find a housemate.
