Supporting our diverse community
Race Equality Student Ambassador team
Improving the experience of students from Black, Asian and minority ethnic backgrounds at York St John University.
Who we are
Our Race Equality Ambassadors are current students employed by the University.
The team aims to create networks, improve student experiences and close the degree awarding gap for students from under-represented ethnicities. We run student-led campaigns, events and projects to celebrate our diverse community and to advance our shared goal of becoming and anti-racist university.
Why do we need Race Equality Student Ambassadors?
We know that race inequality is a problem across the higher education sector, so as a university we are working towards a Race Equality Charter bronze award status.
We want to empower our Race Equality Student Ambassadors to create a supportive community for their peers.
Our mission
Belonging: Create a supportive and inclusive community and increase students' sense of belonging
Conversation: Provide safe spaces for open conversations on race
Allyship: Empower students to safely challenge discrimination on campus
Influence: Make positive change at all levels of the University
What we do
Our Race Equality Ambassadors plan and run all kinds of activities, online and on campus. Highlights from 2021-22 include:
- Student-led discussion groups
- Board games café
- West African dance classes
- Eid celebrations
- Instagram photography competition
