Yorkshire Academy of Sport Launched

The academy, which specialises in elite sport provision, injury prevention and rehabilitation and grassroots competition, is located at York St John University Sports Campus on Haxby Road. Harrogate FC, who narrowly missed promotion to League Two last season, kicked off their pre-season training at the Yorkshire Academy of Sport launch event this week.

Jamie Salter, Lecturer in Coaching Science at the University and an Academy Director, said: “It’s great to welcome Harrogate FC to the Yorkshire Academy of Sport today as part of our launch. Our goal is to enhance sports provision in the community on elite, amateur and school levels. With leading consultants, specialists and ex-professional athletes working at the Academy, we’re in a great place to engage with those looking for expert provision in sport. With access to state-of-the-art facilities at York St John University Sports Campus, students in the school of sport will also gain first-hand experience of providing sports consultancy, injury support and elite training.”

By working in collaboration with community partners, the Academy will provide a high-quality service targeting physical development, sports performance and injury support. Community partners will be offered:

- Health and fitness assessment and evaluation (field and laboratory based)

- Performance assessment and evaluation (field and laboratory based)

- Performance analysis

- Injury prevention strategies

- Injury treatment, reconditioning and return to sport support

- Design and delivery of strength and conditioning

- Multi sport after school activities

- Design and delivery of physical literacy

- Practitioner education and CPD

Simon Weaver, Harrogate FC Manager, said: “It’s a pleasure to be invited to the launch of the Yorkshire Academy of Sport. The facilities and expertise here are fantastic and it’s a great opportunity for us to work with the specialists during pre-season and beyond.
