University land gets planning approval for affordable housing

Published: 22 April 2019

Yorkshire Housing are planning 69 affordable homes.

Planning permission has been granted for 69 new affordable homes on land off Windmill Lane, formerly playing fields owned by York St John University.

All the houses, to be built by Yorkshire Housing, will be family homes with front and rear gardens and off-street parking. The development also includes a children’s playground with play equipment and open public space.

Rob Hickey, Chief Operating Officer at York St John University said: “We are delighted that the application for planning permission to develop much needed affordable housing on land off Windmill Lane has been approved. We have worked closely with Yorkshire Housing to ensure that the proposed development of 69 properties are affordable for people buying homes in York. The sale of this land follows significant investment in new sports facilities at Haxby Road in order to meet the needs of both our students and the wider community.”

Tenures will include affordable rent, rent to buy and shared ownership to support a genuinely mixed and sustainable community. The scheme, which reflects the diverse mix of housing needs across the city, was strongly supported by the City of York Council’s Housing Strategy and Development team.
