York St John University student Tom Ingram took gold at the recent British Weight Lifting 2024 Championships – his first national win.
Currently in his first year of an MSc (Hons) degree in Physiotherapy (Pre-Registration), Tom took the gold medal in the Open category of the British Senior competition held at the Birmingham NEC.
Tom won the 81 kilogram (kg) class, competing against 11 others in his category, several of whom were national medal winning lifters. This makes him the first new British champion in this class in seven years.
He completed a 124kg snatch (lifting the barbell from the ground to overhead in one continuous motion), followed by a clean and jerk (a two-movement exercise in which the weight is raised above the head, following an initial lift to shoulder level) of 159kgs.
Tom, who often trains at York St John University’s Sports Park in Haxby Road, said: “This was an incredibly competitive class, and it was amazing to win it.
“I’ve worked really hard for 20 years for this, and while I’ve won Silver in events before, this is my first national win.
“Sport gave me an identity when I was growing up and I think if I presented this medal to my younger self now he’d be absolutely amazed!”
Despite winning Gold, Tom has no intention of resting on his laurels – over the summer, “as a break”, he now plans to try athletics for the first time!
