York St John University Vice Chancellor Professor Karen Bryan OBE has personally thanked the University’s main supporters during the first Cordukes Circle event. Cordukes members include alumni, former staff members, local philanthropists and local philanthropic organisations who have helped support the University through regular donations, giving in kind, or offering their time to support student development. Other Cordukes members were invited in recognition of their decision to leave York St John a gift in their will and create a lasting York St John legacy.

The Vice Chancellor opened the inaugural event with an insightful exploration of York St John’s commitment to our local community, our plans for the future, and the range of courses available. For those Cordukes members who had not visited campus since they graduated, if at all, this was an important way to highlight York St John’s values and how they align with their own. Of particular interest was the Clarence Street development for local community mental health provision, and the university’s work with the military.

Attendees also heard from postgraduate students Natalie Toy and Amy McCarthy, who spoke about their current studies at York St John.

After learning more about York St John’s diverse and growing postgraduate offering, Cordukes members were invited to network with one another, members of our Executive Board and our Vice Chancellor over lunch. Afterwards, they were led on a guided tour of campus to learn more about our institution’s history, how it blends with our modern aspirations and to see our new Creative Centre. Cordukes members enjoyed seeing how our newest facilities are used by students to further their creative aspirations.

After completing their tour, Christian Smith, President of Wellbeing and Diversity at the Students’ Union, addressed the Cordukes Circle. As a member of the alumni-funded scholarships panel, Chris knows first hand the importance of the scholarships to current students and the lasting impact they can have on successful applicants. In his short talk, he highlighted the necessity of ongoing support for students, and thanked Cordukes Circle members on behalf of the student body for their continued support.
