Divine Charura MBE, Professor of Counselling Psychology at York St John University, has received a fellowship from the British Psychological Society's (BPS) Division of Coaching Psychology. He was awarded the fellowship at the Division of Coaching Psychology Conference 2026 in celebration of his significant contributions to coaching psychology and professional practice.

Alongside his academic career, Professor Charura has extensive clinical experience across the NHS, voluntary and private sectors, working in both inpatient and outpatient settings. He is a registered Counselling Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and a registered Psychotherapist with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). In January he was appointed MBE in HM The King’s New Year Honours list 2026.

Professor Charura teaches on the Doctorate in Counselling Psychology and leads The Doctorate Thesis modules at York St John University. His research focuses on mental health, trauma and psychological wellbeing across the lifespan. Working nationally and internationally, he has supported frontline professionals, humanitarian aid workers, refugees, and asylum seekers through evidence-based interventions.

Commenting on his fellowship, Professor Divine Charura said:

"I am deeply honoured to receive the BPS Division of Coaching Psychology Fellowship in recognition of my contribution to the field. I was moved by the warmth and sense of shared purpose at the conference, and by the opportunity to connect with so many inspiring colleagues. I dedicate this Fellowship to the individuals, communities, organisations, and charities I work with and learn from.

"I am also grateful to my colleagues at York St John University for our shared commitment to social justice, and to the York St John Communities Centre, the Institute for Social Justice, and the Institute for Health and Care Improvement, whose work highlights the power of belonging, inclusion, and connection. At a time when the world can feel increasingly fragmented, coaching psychology plays a vital role in creating spaces where people are seen, heard, and treated with dignity."

Alison Cole, Chartered Coaching and Educational Psychologist, and Fellow of the British Psychological Society, added:

"This is a highly deserved honour that reflects Divine’s outstanding dedication, leading research, and continuous contributions to the field of Coaching Psychology. We couldn't be prouder to see his sustained and impactful contribution celebrated by the British Psychological Society.

"This year’s Division of Coaching Psychology conference theme reflected evidence, opportunities, and momentum for social impact from coaching psychology through the focus of 'belonging' and provided a fitting forum in which to celebrate Divine’s contribution to Coaching Psychology."
