Chapel opens doors so students can ‘grab a jab’ at Welcome Week

York St John University is hosting pop-up vaccination clinics on its Lord Mayor’s Walk campus to support the nationwide COVID-19 vaccine rollout. Students will be offered their first or second jabs as they come to campus for Welcome Week at the end of September. 

They are to be held in the Chapel of St John the Evangelist on campus, one of the most unusual venues for a vaccination clinic in York to date.  

We’ve partnered with the NHS (Nimbuscare) to provide the clinics, on the following dates/times: 

• Monday 27 September 10am to 4pm 

• Tuesday 28 September 10am to 4pm

The clinics are open to members of the public, as well as students and members of staff.  

Madeline Ruff, Chief Executive Officer for Nimbuscare, said: “We’ve had a positive response to the pop-up clinics that we’ve already held, which is why we’ve set up these additional clinics during university freshers’ week. 

“In recent months, we’ve held clinics in a wide variety of settings within the local community, but few are more beautiful or unique than the spaceship-like Central Hall building at the University of York and the serene surroundings of the Chapel at York St John University. Our teams are really looking forward to experiencing these special locations.”  

The vaccination clinics at York St John are one of several measures to reduce infection risk as we begin a new academic year on campus. The University’s ‘Keep it Kind on campus’ campaign urges students and staff to be considerate as we adapt to life without legal Covid restrictions. Everyone is expected to wearing face coverings indoors or in crowded areas, sanitise their hands and respect each other's space.  

Regular testing will also be part of life on campus this term. Students must take a test before travelling to university and continue to test twice a week throughout September and October. Home testing kits will be handed out to all students in Welcome Week.
