This November, in a UK first, the Performance Academy Class of 2024 graduated at York Minster alongside York St John University’s School of the Arts. The 7 graduates were the first cohort to complete this inclusive 3-year course designed to cater to the diverse needs and creative aspirations of adults with learning disabilities and/or autism.
Based at Mind the Gap in Bradford, Performance Academy is validated by York St John University to Certificate of Education in Performing Arts Level 4. Equivalent to the first year of a degree, it is the only course of its kind in the UK.
Offering professional training in theatre, music, dance, and industry studies, the course goes beyond developing artistic skills - it also fosters confidence, communication, and teamwork. Each student receives personalised support through one-to-one assessments, ensuring that their learning experience is tailored to their individual needs.
The Academy’s fully accessible studios provide a safe and inspiring space where students collaborate with experienced artists and connect with professional companies. At its core, the Performance Academy is about empowering people with learning disabilities and/or autism to explore their creative potential in a supportive and nurturing environment. Whether they aim for personal fulfilment or professional growth, students leave with the skills and confidence to express themselves and thrive in the world of the performing arts.
Professor Matthew Reason, Director of the Institute for Social Justice at York St John University said: “It was fantastic to witness this moment and be able to celebrate the achievement of the students. They are pioneers with unique voices and great talent as creative performers.
“As well as their hard work and commitment, it was the result of the University and Mind the Gap working together to make this possible, providing new pathways to higher education qualifications and equality of opportunity.”
Melissa Conyers, Head of Academy at Mind the Gap said: “Performance Academy was created with the mission of unlocking the full creative potential of students with learning disabilities and/or autism.
“It’s a place where exploration, learning, and growth happen side by side with confidence-building, skill development, and the forging of lasting connections. Graduation isn’t just about earning a certificate; it’s a pivotal moment in time to celebrate the talented creatives our students have become.
“While the journey hasn’t always been easy, watching our students face challenges head-on, overcome their fears, and grow into confident and capable creatives has been one of the most remarkable experiences in my professional career.”
Congratulations to Cara, Connor, Jake, Katy, Shannon, Theo and Toby, our first Mind the Gap Performance Academy graduating cohort.
