Professor Luke Nichter from Chapman University in California has joined York St John University’s School of Humanities this semester as a Visiting Professor.

Luke is a Professor of History and James H. Cavanaugh Endowed Chair in Presidential Studies at Chapman University. His area of specialty is the Cold War, the modern presidency, and U.S. political and diplomatic history, with a focus on the 1960s from John F. Kennedy through to Watergate.

He is also a New York Times bestselling author or editor of 8 books, his most recent monograph being The Year That Broke Politics: Collusion and Chaos in the Presidential Election of 1968 (Yale University Press), which was chosen as a Best Book of 2023 by the Wall Street Journal.

Luke is joining York St John as a Leverhulme Visiting Professor. This prestigious award, from the Leverhulme Trust, is in recognition of his specialism and expertise in research and teaching of modern American history, particularly the political history – broadly defined – of the 1960s and 1970s.

While at York St John, Luke will be teaching across the History and American Studies programmes, where he will share his expertise with undergraduate and postgraduate students.

“It is an absolute privilege to be able to contribute to the York St John community as a Leverhulme Visiting Professor,” said Luke.

“It is a fascinating time to study U.S. political history and I look forward to working with, and learning from, York St John’s bright students and talented faculty.”

Professor Anne-Marie Evans, Head of the School of Humanities at York St John, said the timing of Luke’s visiting professorship could not be more perfect, given how his work aligns with U.S. presidential elections.

“I am absolutely delighted to be able to welcome Professor Nichter to the School of Humanities this semester,” said Annie-Marie.

“I know that staff and students alike are excited to work with him, and I hope that Luke will enjoy being part of our School community.”
