Students given a helping hand thanks to donation from York-based charitable trust

The Ed De Nunzio Charitable Trust are continuing their support of York St John University students with a further donation of £12,000 towards the Ed De Nunzio Scholarship.  

The Trust was set up in 2011 in memory of York student Ed De Nunzio who lost his life in an accident at the age of 18. It provides grants to support children and young people from disadvantaged backgrounds offering them opportunities to expand their physical, educational, social and emotional horizons. 

The grant will be used to offer a scholarship of £1,000 per year for 3 years to help support 4 students facing financial difficulties. The students supported will be from York and the surrounding area and be aged 25 or under.  

Julie De Nunzio from the Ed De Nunzio Charitable Trust explained: 

“Ed was passionate about education and was so looking forward to taking his place up at university, sadly he never got there. We are delighted that his legacy will help 4 other young people on the path to achieving their own life goals.” 

Professor Karen Bryan OBE, Vice Chancellor of York St John University said: 

“We are grateful and humbled to receive such a generous donation once again from the Ed De Nunzio Charitable Trust. These grants will open doors for our students, providing life-changing opportunities and ongoing support throughout their time with us. We are incredibly thankful to the Trust for their tangible commitment to York St John University.” 

Current scholarship recipients from the Trust’s first grant donation described the impact the funds have made on their university career.  

“Without this funding it would have taken me years to save up the money to make my home a more effective study space but also a safe space for my son.” 

“The scholarship provided me with a safety net of funds so I could continue with a job that provided me career fulfilment, despite it not meeting my financial needs. Thank you so much to the Ed De Nunzio Charitable Trust for your contribution to my studies allowing me to achieve my potential.” 

York St John University offers a range of scholarships for home and international students, with the goal of breaking down barriers to education. The Ed De Nunzio Scholarship will be relaunched for the 2024/25 academic year and is one of the University’s alumni-funded scholarships which support York St John’s most underrepresented students.
