Graduate arts showcase highlights students’ creative flair

Published: 04 May 2012

The talent of graduating Faculty of Arts’ students will be on display between Monday 14 May and Saturday 2 June as York St John University and select venues across the city exhibit work as part of the University’s Create festival.

Held annually, Create gives York St John a unique opportunity to exhibit the work and talents of its students to the wider public. Work on show during the festival includes music, theatre and dance performances, fine art and product design exhibitions, and film and TV screenings.

Commenting on the festival, Martin Downie, Dean of the Faculty of Arts said:

“Create12 is one of the true highlights of our year, demonstrating the University’s support and commitment to developing the next wave of artists and commentators. The showcase is also an important part of York’s cultural calendar, cementing its reputation as a city of festivals. We warmly invite people to come along and experience the diverse range of work on offer.”

Alongside the array of performances and exhibitions held throughout the festival, there will be a series of short film screenings at York St John University on Friday 1 June presented by final year Film and TV Production students and recent graduates from the programme. These include award-winning films made by up-and-coming student film-makers who have recently scooped Royal Television Society awards and international film award commendations.

Product Design student, Holly Orton, will be exhibiting her work at the Design showcase held in the Guildhall from 29 May – 1 June. Holly is celebrating securing a position as a Visual Designer for H&A Marketing when she leaves York St John University. H&A produce licensed and own-brand washing and bathing products, sold in major retailers across the country. Holly’s role will involve package design and the creation of visuals and mock-ups of the products.

The Create12 showcase runs at York St John University and in select York venues from Monday 14 May – Saturday 2 June. For further information please contact Vanessa Simmons on T: 01904 876433 or E: v.simmons@yorksj.ac.uk
