Ebor lecture to look at the implications of food parcels

Published: 28 May 2014

‘The morality of the food parcel’ will be discussed at a free lecture in York next week, led by Dr Helen Cameron from The Salvation Army.

Dr Cameron is a practical theologian and founding Director of the Oxford Centre for Ecclesiology and Practical Theology where she still holds a fellowship.  Since 2010 she has been Head of Public Affairs for The Salvation Army where she leads a team that lobbies on behalf of those the organisation serves in the interests of greater social justice.  She has written books, both on her own and with others, on practical theology, theological reflection and the mission of the local church.

Her lecture, on Wednesday 4 June at 7.00pm is the latest in the Ebor lecture series. ‘The morality of the food parcel: emergency food as a response to austerity,’ will look at the way in which churches have responded to the fallout of the 2008 financial crisis with the provision of emergency food. Churches are being urged to think about the longer terms implications of this response and to continue to press government agencies and private companies to remind them of their responsibilities to people on low incomes.

The theme of this year’s Ebor lecture series is the Morality of Austerity, its effects on the most vulnerable members of society and the relationship between the citizen and the state.

The 2013-14 Ebor lectures are organised by York St John University, York Minster, York Institute for Community Theology, The Churches Regional Commission, the Carmelites and the Methodist Church.

This lecture will be held at The Salvation Army Hall on Gillygate in York on Wednesday 4 June and starts at 7.00pm. Admission, by ticket only, is from 6.15pm and the lectures start at 7.00pm. Each lecture is followed by a short question and answer session with an anticipated end time of 8.30pm. Tickets are free and can be booked by contacting the Ebor Lectures Co-ordinator on T: 01904 876474 or E:eborlectures@yorksj.ac.uk
