York St John men's rugby league team wins the Northern Conference Cup

Published: 03 April 2014

York St John University’s men’s rugby league team made history last week, winning the institution’s first team gold medal in a BUCS competition.

York St John’s 1st team won the BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Northern Conference cup final.
They played Bradford 1st at Haxby Road sports fields last Wednesday and won the match 20 – 12.

The match saw Bradford put the first points on the board but this was soon flipped on its head in a comeback from the York St John team which gave them a two point lead. During the second half Bradford took the lead but this was, again short lived as YSJ came back with a converted try and a try leading to the final score of 20 – 12.

Their route to the final, via a knockout competition, included a semi-final match against Leeds (which YSJ won 29 – 12), quarter-final against UCLAN (22 – 16 to YSJ) and a last 16 place versus Manchester (which YSJ won 8 – 4).

Adam McSkimming, President of the Students’ Union, said: “We are extremely proud of the team and their achievements this season. This marks a moment in York St John University’s history and another milestone I how we have progressed in sport in recent years.”
