York St John University student is a shining example of student volunteering

ork St John University student Jack Bennett has received the Shining Light award for his volunteering activity.

He was nominated by North Yorkshire Sport for his numerous volunteer roles, including coordinating the University’s multi-sports club.

There are a number of ‘shining lights’ across England, each has been recognised by their local Country Sports Partnership for inspiring their local community to come together through sport. The awards scheme is part of Community Games programme which aims to build on the legacy of the Olympic and Paralympic games following London 2012. 

Jack works as a Multi-Sports Coordinator for the University. York St John’s Inclusive Activity Club (YSJIAC) works with students and members of the local community with various disabilities. One of the clubs areas of activity is Multi-sports which provides sporting opportunities for people with learning disabilities and is run on campus every Saturday morning.

The recent 24-hour baton relay event was his idea and raised £375 for the charity SNAPPY (Special Needs Activities and Play Provision in York).

The Sports Science and Exercise Practice student has always been interested in volunteering and started age 10, coaching younger classes in tag rugby sessions at primary school in Berkshire. His volunteering continued with local cubs groups, youth clubs and Thames Valley Police. After college he did a work placement with Get Berkshire Active which inspired him to continue working in sports.

Jack said: “The role at Get Berkshire Active really inspired me. It included working at the Berkshire School Games and assisting with the Olympic Torch relay when it visited a local town. I still go back to visit and assist with taking workshops at the leadership academy and taking a role at both the winter and Summer Berkshire School Games.

"I came to university and found the York St John multi-sports club, I was hooked from the beginning and loved waking up every Saturday morning to put on my uniform and be a part of the sessions. The highlight of my volunteering journey was the summer of 2013; I went to Zambia to teach tag rugby, this was a massive eye opener and made you appreciate everything you had.

"I can't explain how rewarding volunteering is, so why not give it a go!”

As well as for various York St John schemes, Jack currently volunteers with the RFU and the Sports Special Partnership. He was also a volunteer at the recent Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and hopes to volunteer at next year’s Rugby World Cup which will be held at venues across England and Wales.
