Next St Wilfrid lecture to examine lessons learnt from the Cold War

Published: 15 September 2014

The St Wilfrid lecture series continues with a presentation by Professor Paul Rogers from Bradford University.

The Professor of Peace Studies will look at ‘a Century on the Edge: from Cold War to hot world, 1945 – 2045’ at the free lecture which takes place at Ripon Cathedral on Thursday 18 September at 7pm.

Professor Paul Rogers worked originally in the biological and environmental sciences, including lecturing at Imperial College, London, but has worked for the past 35 years on international security. He is a consultant to Oxford Research Group, an independent UK think tank, and writes and broadcasts about international security issues.

His lecture will look at the hundred years from the start of the nuclear age in 1945 and how mankind has had to come to terms with its unprecedented ability to destroy itself and damage the global environment. Now two-thirds of the way through this century, he will assess how we are doing and what has been the impact of the Cold War.

The Very Reverend John Dobson, Dean of Ripon Cathedral, said: “I am delighted that Professor Paul Rogers is giving the next St Wilfrid lecture at Ripon Cathedral. His title ‘A Century on the Edge: from Cold War to hot world, 1945 – 2045’ suggests that we will hear an extremely engaging and thought-provoking lecture encouraging us to consider whether we have learnt any lessons from the Cold War and whether we, as a community of nations, can now learn to live within our world-wide limits.”

Tickets for the lectures, which are free, are available from the Cathedral Office, E: judithbustard@riponcathedral.org.uk or T: (01765) 603462.
