York St John students exhibit at Light Night Leeds

Published: 02 October 2014

Work by two York St John University students will feature as part of Light Night Leeds.

This annual evening arts festival takes place on Friday with more than 50 events and illuminations across the city. Museums, galleries, theatres and open spaces will open their doors for a mix of events including light installations, street theatre, film, dance and exhibitions.

MA Fine Art students Ritchard Allaway and Luc Jones were selected for Light Night’s Shine programme, funded by Arts Council England, which supports the work of emerging artists.

The two artists have collaborated on a piece of sculpture made from cement and fluorescent tubes that aims to identify the relationship between concrete and light and create discussion.

They said: “[We are] two artists exploring the relationship between mixed materials to produce a unified, sensorial aesthetic dialogue which engages with their participating audience.
“Working within the boundaries of minimal forms, Allaway and Jones are identifying the relationship of concrete and light that creates a reflective discourse within a spatial experience. Occupying a space to compose meditative discussion, the work showcased embodies the viewer into an illusion of perception.”

The full evening’s programme is available on the event website.
