Ebor Lecture: 'The common good in an era of austerity'

Published: 07 July 2014

‘The common good in an era of austerity’ will be discussed at a free lecture in York next week led by Jon Cruddas, MP for Dagenham and Rainham and Member of the Shadow Cabinet.

Working as Deputy Political Secretary to Tony Blair after the 1997 general election, Jon Cruddas was heavily involved in the introduction of the national minimum wage. A member of the Transport and General Workers Union from 1989 until his election to parliament in 2001, he also mediated between the Prime Minister and the trade unions.  Tens of thousands of trade union and Labour party members supported him when he stood for the position of deputy leader of the party in 2007. In the most recent general election he campaigned against Barking and Dagenham’s strong BNP presence and he continues to oppose this movement.

His lecture, on Wednesday 9 July at 7.00pm is the latest in the Ebor lecture series. The theme of this year’s Ebor lecture series is the Morality of Austerity, its effects on the most vulnerable members of society and the relationship between the citizen and the state.

The 2013-14 Ebor lectures are organised by York St John University, York Minster, York Institute for Community Theology, The Churches Regional Commission, the Carmelites and the Methodist Church.

Tickets are free and can be booked online at www.yorksj.ac.uk/eborlectures or by contacting the Ebor Lectures Co-ordinator on T: 01904 876474 or E: eborlectures@yorksj.ac.uk
