York St John netballers are top of the league
Published: 23 March 2014
York St John University’s Netball 1st team have won their league, meaning a promotion next season.
Last week they played Sheffield Hallam’s 1st team and won 49 – 42, claiming points which took them to the top of their table – the BUCS Netball 2013-2014 Northern 2B League.
They have won nine of their 10 matches to come top. Other teams in their BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) league include squads from Leeds Met Carnegie, Sheffield Hallam University, University of Sheffield, University of Hull and University of Leeds.
The first team will play in the BUCS Northern 1A League next year – the top league in the northern division, before the premier teams - against teams from across the north rather than just the north-east. This is the second year in a row that the team have secured promotion.
Key sporting events continue this week with the BUCS Northern Conference cup final for Rugby League, between York St John 1st and Bradford 1st, taking place at Haxby Road sports fields on Wednesday afternoon (26 March).
