Vice Chancellor to be awarded honorary degree

Professor David Fleming, Vice Chancellor of York St John University, will be awarded an honorary degree in recognition of the enormous contribution he has made whilst at the University and whilst working in the Higher Education sector.

Professor Fleming, who is retiring from his role as Vice Chancellor and from Higher Education altogether in September, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Education at a ceremony in York Minster on Tuesday 17 November 2015.

Under his tenure York St John has undergone a remarkable transformation. Growth in student enrolments has been among the best in the Higher Education sector, including considerable success in attracting students from outside York and the wider region. By establishing financial strength and stability the University has been able to invest heavily in its campus, which in turn has contributed to unprecedented improvements in the student experience.

Professor Fleming has also shown great commitment to York and to the wider community, being a member of the Board of Directors at Science City York, Deputy Chair of the UCAS Board of Trustees, and Trustee of Yorkshire Universities and of Higher York.

Professor David Fleming, Vice Chancellor of York St John University said:

“I am delighted to receive such an accolade from the University I have developed a deep affection for over the last five years. It has been a great honour to watch York St John grow not only in terms of student numbers but also in terms of reputation and strength. I have very much enjoyed my time as Vice Chancellor and will miss working at the University and with the colleagues who nominated me for this honorary award.

“The award of an Honorary Doctorate is an entirely fitting tribute to David’s hard work, commitment and achievements as Vice Chancellor of York St John. The University has benefitted enormously from his skilled leadership and is in a strong position to move forward following his retirement. I know I can speak on behalf of the Governing Body, staff and students, in saying that David will be very much missed and we do hope that he will continue to be involved with York St John in other ways in the future.”  

Professor Fleming is the first of a number of honorary graduates to be announced who will receive honorary degrees from York St John University in November.
