The annual awards celebrate the best in student television from across the UK and give students the opportunity to compete against talent from across the region’s universities, alongside showcasing their work to some of the industry’s biggest names. They are the only awards which are judged by professionals in the television and broadcasting industry and are the gold standard of quality.

Two films made by students who graduated from York St John last year, have been nominated in the Drama category. ‘Eden’ by Purple Thunder Productions features two people looking for hope in a post-apocalyptic world; and ‘Amber & I’ by Cascabel Productions, follows the story of a young boy called Billy who is struggling to understand his own sexuality and becomes a victim of bullies.

Students nominated for Craft awards include James Bentley, Andrew Palfreyman and Jonathan White, who have been shortlisted for sound on ‘Trapped in Terror’, a powerful film about sleep paralysis. Joe Green and Nyle Hunt are also in the running for a Craft award for camera for their work on ‘We Are Only Human’, a web series exploring how movement can be used for escapism. In 2016 ‘We Are Only Human’ won a York Culture Award for best film.

Jenny Kean, Subject Director for Media Production at York St John University comments, “We are really proud that our students’ work has been recognised in this way by a judging panel of industry professionals. Especially pleasing is to see them nominated across different categories, showing their creativity across a range of skills.”

The awards ceremony takes place on Wednesday 22 February at Sheffield United Football Club, in an evening hosted by BBC Look North presenter Amy Garcia.
