Business School blazes the trail for business learning in York

Published: 06 March 2012

York St John Business School is giving York businesses the chance to step up to the mark with the launch of the city’s first Institute of Leadership & Management (ILM) programmes.

The launch comes in the same week as the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) reports that half of British managers think their immediate superior is ineffective.

The ILM provides leaders and managers across the UK with a wide range of specialist qualifications that give them the practical skills and knowledge to perform and develop in their roles.

From September, York St John Business School will offer the ILM Level 5 Award in Management, Certificate in Management and Diploma in Management. The courses are designed to give middle managers the skills they need to manage their teams effectively though the recession, ensure a motivated workforce and achieve business goals.

Course participants can choose from a range of options to build their Award, Certificate or Diploma, developing the skills that are most relevant to their specific organisation, role or industry.

Business School Dean, Jackie Mathers, says the new qualifications have been introduced to help make the city’s businesses more sustainable and complement the suite of leadership and development programmes already running at the Business School.

“This week’s CMI study suggests that high-performing organisations spend more on management and leadership development, and managers in those businesses are more likely to praise their boss,” she says.

“But it’s easy to praise your boss when things are going well, and blame them when things are going badly.

“In the current economic climate, a lot of responsibility and pressure is falling on the shoulders of middle managers to meet business targets and maintain motivated teams.  If those people don’t have – or feel they have - the skills to deliver, you can see how accusations of poor management start to perpetuate.”

She says the new ILM suite of qualifications will help middle managers develop their skills, which in turn will strengthen businesses across the board. This is the first time the ILM qualifications have been offered in York.
