Thai ministry gives 2012 sporting legacy a boost in York

Published: 12 September 2012

York St John University has signed a statement of intent with the Thai Institute of Physical Education to build international relations in sport and tourism. The Government of Thailand is providing student scholarships and funding for international projects inspired, in part, by the spirit of the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

Mr Sompong Chatavithee, who is president of the Institute of Physical Education, visited the University with Mr Praliwat Wannaklang, vice president and Mr Bunjird Sonsuwan, chief of international affairs and public relations, to explore placement of their government sponsored students of sport and physical education.

During the visit the delegation from Thailand was given a tour of the University and its new 57 acre centre for sport on Haxby Road. They also met with pro vice chancellor Sue Reece, Professor Pam Dawson, Professor Andy Smith MBE and Dr Ian Sadler from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences to discuss several areas of collaboration between the two institutions. It is anticipated that this will lead to a long term partnership offering opportunities to staff, students and the wider community of York St John University.

Professor Smith MBE said: “The Thai delegation was very impressed by our new facilities and very keen to establish links in sports science, physical education, physiotherapy and sport massage. This partnership is further evidence of the exceptional nature of the opportunities in sport that are provided by York St John University.
