Student satisfaction at York St John rises to highest ever level

Published: 13 August 2013

Student satisfaction at York St John University is at its highest ever level and up 19 places from 2012 to take it to joint 34th place, according to a nationwide survey of final year students.

The 2013 National Student Survey (NSS) questioned UK undergraduates on a range of aspects of their student experience and measured overall student satisfaction.

For students at York St John University this score has risen from an outstanding 86% in 2012 to an exceptional 88% in 2013. The national average for overall satisfaction sits at 86% for English higher education institutions. The University is now ranked equal 34th out of 127 higher education institutions for overall satisfaction, and up a remarkable 54 places from 2006.

The following courses received a 100% overall satisfaction score: Physiotherapy (full and part-time); Occupational Therapy (part-time); Product Design; Children, Young People and Families; Media; and the Foundation degree in Supporting Learning; and Foundation degree in Theology and Ministry (part-time).

The survey, conducted by Ipsos MORI, asks final year undergraduate students to rate their experiences in a range of areas based on 23 questions. These include feedback and assessment, learning resources and personal development. This year York St John achieved a record 79% student response rate, which is higher than the national average of 69%. The results help the University identify areas of strength and weakness and plan its future development of teaching and learning.

Speaking in response to the NSS survey, Professor David Fleming, Vice Chancellor of York St John University, welcomed the results:
“We are delighted to receive such excellent results from our final year students. This endorsement not only validates the emphasis that the University places on teaching and learning, but also highlights our efforts to ensure that our students receive an exceptional experience.

He added:
“The results of the NSS survey echo our mission to put students at the heart of everything we do and follow on from the Times Higher Education’s annual Student Experience Survey which saw York St John move into the top 10, rising from 58th to 9th place in April 2013. We attribute this to the dedication and commitment of all of our staff and our continued investment in our campus and facilities, and amongst other projects, are currently completing work on a £1.2 million redevelopment of our student services centre which will provide top-class learner support services and facilities for our new and returning students.”
