York performer recognised with theatre award

Published: 27 June 2013

A York St John University student’s portrayal of a young woman’s experience of anorexia has been awarded the 2013 Theatre Graduate Prize by the university and York Theatre Royal.

Final year student Vicky Sharples received the award for her performance, Awkward Annie.  The performance draws on her personal experience of and recovery from anorexia, and Vicky describes it as “an honest, candid and satirical account of mental illness, showing a person remembering how to be human; living with two minds and two bodies.”

The annual Theatre Graduate Prize is given to a final year student or group of students by York Theatre Royal and York St John University.  Dr Matthew Reason, Reader in Theatre at the university, explains: “Students are invited to put forward any of their third year practice-based theatre work for judging by the theatre’s artistic and associate directors. The winner receives a period of artistic mentoring at the theatre and the opportunity to present work at a platform event hosted by the theatre in the autumn.

“As well as recognising the work produced by students, the prize represents the commitment from the university and the theatre to helping in the transition from education to professional arts practice. It provides a fantastic opportunity for the winner to develop their work, with a view to further performances or tours.”

York Theatre Royal Artistic Director Damian Cruden adds: “We are delighted to award this year’s Theatre Graduate Prize to Vicky Sharples.  We felt that she demonstrated exceptional potential as a performer, and were impressed by the power, inventiveness and honesty of her solo piece.  We are looking forward to working with her in the development of this piece.”

Vicky says: “I create performance which bridges the gap between the private and the public. Awkward Annie is a singular interpretation of this illness, but I embody a mass of slender-silent-struggles. If this production can help one person, then my performance is well worth it!

“York Theatre Royal’s artistic support, insight and creativity are invaluable. The kindness and generosity I have received from the team will not only aid the theatrical progression of the piece but promote it more than I could have ever achieved on my own. I am incredibly grateful.”
