Riders invited to take part in charity cycle challenge

Published: 07 August 2014

There’s just one month to go until the Heart of York Bike Ride.

York St John University is one of the partners of the British Heart Foundation event, which sets off from the University’s sports fields on Haxby Road on Sunday 7 September.

Registration is open and cyclists (aged 14 and over) can take part in either a 22 mile or 40 mile route. Individuals can sign up or companies, sports clubs and groups of friends can enter teams of five.

Both routes are circular and on-road and include some of North Yorkshire’s finest countryside and moorland.

Phil McMahon, British Heart Foundation York Committee Vice Chair, said: “This event is for cyclists of all abilities and is raising funds for pioneering British Heart Foundation heart failure research.”

Last year’s event raised more than £15,000 for the charity.

Professor Andy Smith, Professor of Exercise and Sport Science at York St John University, said: “It was wonderful to see so many cyclists, including staff and students from York St John University and many people new to cycling, take part last year. We hope people across York and North Yorkshire register today for Heart of York 2014 and join the fight for every heartbeat on Sunday 7 September.”

The charity is also looking for volunteers to help out on the day with tasks including registration, marshalling and refreshments.
