York St John student wins award at Student Employee of the Year

Amy Harkins, 21, was named as national Student Employee of the Year by the National Association of Student Employment Services (NASES) at a special awards ceremony on 2 July, beating off competition from Universities and Colleges across the UK.

Amy, originally from Chesterfield, has worked at Café Harlequin in York city centre since she started her BA English Literature and English Language degree at York St John University in September 2012. She was nominated in the ‘Step up to Leadership’ category in recognition of the additional responsibility she has taken on during her 3 year working at Café Harlequin and her commitment and loyalty, and won both the regional and national award in that category.

NASES supports student employment services with the aim of increasing the number and quality of jobs available to students across the UK. The Student Employee of the Year awards have been running since 2002 and recognise those students who have made an exceptional achievement combining part-time work and their studies.

Commenting on her win, Amy said: “I can’t believe I have won, I am so pleased. It will also look good on my CV.”

Marie Howells, from Café Harlequin, said: “Amy has been an asset to the business, she really deserves this award.  She has managed to juggle her studies and working and that is a great achievement”.
