York St John is one of Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers

Published: 14 January 2015

The equality charity publishes its Workplace Equality Index each year and bases the rankings on a range of key indicators including a questionnaire of lesbian, gay and bisexual staff. The University is up 146 places from last year’s ranking of 224.

Emma Wilkins, Director of Student & Staff Services at York St John University, said: “This is our second submission to the Workplace Equality Index and we set ourselves an ambitious target to be in the Top 100 in 2015 and we are overjoyed that we’ve achieved this. Our high ranking is thanks to the effort and enthusiasm of our staff.”

Simon Feeke, Stonewall Director of Workplace Programmes, said: “York St John University and every single employer who secured a position on the Stonewall Top 100 Employers 2015 list performed remarkably this year. Competition has never been fiercer and the new criteria this year has pushed all of the Top 100 to work harder than ever before.”

York St John’s LGBT Staff Network has been instrumental in achieving this result. The groups’ activities have included co-ordinating York LGBT History Month 2014 (and contributing to the 2015 event) and hosting the latest meeting of Campus North, a network of LGBT staff in northern higher education institutions.

In September 2014 the University was named by Stonewall as among the best in Britain for lesbian, gay and bisexual students. York St John University was one of six institutions to score full marks in its annual Gay By Degree online guide.
