The Stonewall list of Top 100 Employers celebrates the pioneering efforts of leading organisations to create inclusive workplaces and York St John University has again scored highly amidst increasing competition.

Vice Chancellor Professor Karen Stanton, a signatory to Stonewall’s #NoBystanders pledge said:

“We pride ourselves on continually developing an inclusive culture for all at York St John University and I am delighted that direct feedback from our staff clearly demonstrates the University’s commitment to LGBT equality in the workplace. To be one of the Top 100 Employers in Stonewall’s prestigious list is a wonderful achievement for our whole University community.”

Now in its thirteenth year, Stonewall’s Workplace Equality Index (WEI) is a powerful benchmarking tool used by employers to help ensure all LGBT employees can be themselves in the workplace.

Participating employers demonstrate their work in 11 areas of employment policy and practice, from training to community engagement. In addition, staff from across each organisation complete an anonymous survey about their experiences at work.

This year, over 90,000 employees completed the staff questionnaire, making it one of the UK's largest national employment surveys.

Josh Willacy from Stonewall commented:

“Over the past year, the work and effort that York St John University has made to create an inclusive environment for LGBT staff and students has been exceptional. From holding thoughtful events, to consolidating a visible group of allies, the university has gone above and beyond. I’m also proud to say that their LGBT network group has been given Highly Commended status once again, a huge achievement.”

The University’s LGBT staff network  is committed to championing LGBT rights in the workplace and their activity includes hosting the launch party for the annual York Pride event. The group has also developed a programme of innovative events for LGBT History Month at York St John, which features Stonewall Chief Executive Ruth Hunt’s Ebor Lecture in York Minster on 22nd February.
