Christ, Sex and Gender at Ripon Cathedral

Published: 16 October 2012

A free lecture taking place at Ripon Cathedral on Thursday 18 October will address some common issues for debate when Professor Lisa Isherwood delivers, Christ, Sex and Gender.

Professor Lisa Isherwood FRSA is a liberation theologian and the director of the Institute for Theological Partnerships at the University of Winchester. Her work explores the nature of incarnation within a contemporary context, including areas such as the body, gender, sexuality and eco-theology.

Professor Isherwood has written, co-authored or edited 19 books, including The Power of Erotic Celibacy (2006), and Introducing Feminist Christologies (2001). She is a founding editor of the international journal Feminist Theology, and from 2007-2009 was Vice President of the European Society of Women in Theological Research.

In welcoming the next Lecturer in the St Wilfrid series, the Dean of Ripon commented: “Professor Lisa Isherwood will bring to us both a welcome and timely reminder of the issues facing the Christian church with regard to sex and gender.  Taking the foundation of the incarnation, God made human, she will lead us into a challenging assessment of what Christianity struggles with issues of gender, freedom and transformation.  We warmly welcome Lisa amongst us and look forward to what she will bring to our debate during this year.”

The annual St Wilfrid lectures, named in honour of Ripon Cathedral’s founder, have been running since 2009.  They are jointly organised and sponsored by York St John University, Ripon Cathedral, the Methodist District of York and Hull, and Ripon and Leeds Diocese.  Previous lectures have ranged widely over questions of faith and public life, with high profile speakers including the Most Revd and Rt Hon Dr John Sentamu, Lord Inderjit Singh, Ruth Gledhill, Baroness Estelle Morris, Professor Terry Eagleton, and Professor Mona Siddiqui.

Professor Lisa Isherwood’s lecture will take place at 7.00pm on Thursday 18 October at Ripon Cathedral.  Admission is free but by ticket only.  To book a ticket email judithbustard@riponcathedral.org.uk or telephone 01765 603462.
