York St John is the highest climber in the University charts

Published: 10 July 2012

Applications to York St John University have increased more than any other university in England according to official statistics published by UCAS on 9 July 2012.

The University is experiencing a massive 11.3% increase, which is even more impressive when the overall statistics show that universities in England are facing a 10% fall in applications for courses starting this autumn, and only 15 universities in the country have seen any increase at all.

UCAS, the main application clearing house for undergraduate courses, released the statistics for applications made by its 30 June deadline.

Commenting on the increase in applications, Professor David Fleming, Vice Chancellor of York St John University, said: “We are thrilled to have such an increase in applications, especially when overall university applications are down in England.  The community on our campus and in the city of York makes this a great place to come and study.  We’ve invested a lot in the quality of our teaching, the campus environment and opportunities for students to get fully involved in student life.  It’s great to see that potential students and their families have recognised how much we are able to offer, I’m sure this has had a real impact on our applications.

“We’ve also put together a strong package of fee waivers and support and coupled this with increased work with schools and colleges and the provision of more information, advice and guidance.  We want to get the message across that a university education remains an excellent choice.”

Since 2008, York St John University undergraduate applications have risen by almost 60% and for 2012 entry it received 9,651 applications by 30 June with growth in applications for the arts, business, education and health and life sciences.

The University has a strong track record of post study success with 92.7% of York St John graduates in employment and further training within six months of graduation. The University was also placed in the top 20 of UK institutions for student assessment of quality of teaching in the most recent National Student Survey and has a well-developed strategy for student number growth.
