Archbishop to give first St Wilfrid lecture of 2014

Published: 25 February 2014

The Most Revd Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York will deliver the first St Wilfrid lecture of 2014.

On the theme of ‘Beyond War and Conflict: Building Communities of Peace and Reconciliation', the lecture will take place at Ripon Cathedral on Thursday 27 February 27 at 7pm.

Archbishop Sentamu gave the very first St Wilfrid Lecture in 2009. The series was initiated as a joint venture between Ripon Cathedral, the Methodist District of York and Hull, the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds and York St John University. The series invites high-profile theologians and public speakers to give lectures which respond to the growing need for theology and education to interact with issues facing society in the 21st century.

The 2014 St Wilfrid Lectures take the 100th anniversary of The First World War as an initial reference point to reflect on what happens beyond war and conflict. All of the 2014 speakers have engaged in aspects of peace-building, conflict resolution or reconciliation transformation. Future speakers in the series include Fr Iyad Twal, Professor Sebastian Kim and Professor Paul Rogers.

The Archbishop of York frequently speaks on international affairs in the House of Lords, with speeches in recent years addressing conflict situations in Tibet and South Sudan.
Tickets for the lectures are available from the Cathedral Office, E: judithbustard@riponcathedral.org.uk or T: (01765) 603462.
