Success for York St John in Varsity 2014

York St John University are celebrating a fantastic 38-10 victory over the University of Sunderland in this year’s Varsity competition – 2014 Clash of the Minsters.

Teams competed in a variety of sports including Basketball, Dance, Volleyball, Tennis, Snowsports and Badminton.

Particular highlights for York St John teams included Women’s netball which was won 75-20 (1st team), 35 -13 (2nd team) and 51-19 (3rd team), Men’s Rugby Union 12-0, Women’s Hockey 14-0 and Men’s Football 4-0 (2nd team), 3-2 (3rd team) and 4-1 (4th team).


Matches took place across campus, including at the new sports facilities on Haxby Road , in Foss Sports Hall, and on the lawns at Lord Mayor’s Walk.

Laura Jackson, SU President, said: “I am immensely proud of all the students who made Varsity go so smoothly. This includes the students who were competing but also those who volunteered to be Varsity makers and those who came along to support. It really is a great example of the community spirit at York St John.”

David Chesser, Chief Operating Officer, said: “What a fantastic event and a great result. Sport at York St John has really developed and all the teams were a credit to the University. “Everyone involved had a great experience playing at our exceptional new facilities on Haxby Road.”
