Published: 05 August 2014

A York St John University Professor has been recognised by a national magazine for his contribution to mentoring.

Bob Garvey, Professor of Business Education, won the Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to Mentoring at the Coaching at Work Awards 2014.

The awards were part of the professional journal’s annual conference event which took place in London last month.

Liz Hall, Coaching at Work editor, said: “We are delighted to acknowledge with these awards the high quality of the articles submitted by the winners and those highly commended, and in addition Professor Garvey, who has made so many contributions to the mentoring, and coaching, profession.”

Professor Garvey is one of Europe’s leading academics in mentoring and coaching and has extensive business experience.

He has published many papers on mentoring in a variety of journals and is a member of the European Mentoring and Coaching Council.

Judges’ comments ahead of the award included:

“Bob is an original and proactive thinker, someone who is not afraid to rock the boat, but always from a well-informed, rigorously researched stance. He is one of the leading figures in the mentoring scene and has made many worthy contributions.”

Professor Garvey said: “Since the early 1990s I have been fascinated by mentoring. Coaching came later! Over the years I have worked with many people, all of whom have influenced me in some way or another. Thank you to them for being my mentors – even if you didn’t know you were! To quote one of them ‘mentoring is awesome!’”.
