York St John helps to create a 'River of Flowers'

Published: 20 October 2014

York St John University was joined by River of Flowers to help transform campus come spring.

River of Flowers is a group that strives to turn urban areas into pockets of plant life to create a greener city and encourage wildlife, such as pollinating insects like bees and butterflies, that are essential for food growth.

They, along with students in the Ethics and Environment Committee and the gardening team lead by Simon Davis, planted 100 yellow tulips and 250 daffodils in the Wildlife Area near student accommodation on Lord Mayors Walk and around the flowers beds located in front of the Students Union.

The planted sites which include the University of York and Haxby Road, aim to create a route, or 'river', through the city that will provide locations for pollinating insects to use to feed and combat the declination of wild invertebrates.

After the planting, talks were held for students and staff by River of Flowers directorate Kathryn Lwin and Buglife's Vicky Kindemba on the purpose of pollinators, the River of Flowers Initiative and the Grow Wild association.

More details about the organisation are available on the River of Flowers website.
