Excellent Ofsted result brings additional places for aspiring primary teachers

Published: 20 August 2012

Aspiring primary school teachers are invited to apply for extra places now available at York St John University.

Today, based on significant strengths identified by Ofsted, the Teaching Agency has allocated 17 additional places to York St John University for students wishing to study Primary Teaching at undergraduate or postgraduate level on courses starting this September.

Julian Stern, Dean of Education and Theology, said: “We are thrilled to have been recognised for the quality learning opportunities we offer our students.  Primary teaching is a very popular course at York St John University with 23 people applying for each place on our undergraduate course.  Because of this, we often have to turn down some very good candidates who could make brilliant teachers. The additional places we’ve been allocated will give some of those people the chance they need to start their careers as primary school teachers.”

Strengths highlighted in the Ofsted inspection include outstanding centre-based training in phonics and early reading and writing, which enables trainees to plan lessons which ensure their pupils can make good progress in their learning, and good quality trainees who, because they continue to display good professional attributes, increasingly reflect on the impact of their teaching on the learning of their pupils and, as a result, have high expectations of themselves and their pupils.
