York St John University sprints into the new term

Published: 09 August 2012

Hot on the heels of Usain Bolt, York St John University has begun work on a 110m sprint track at its new 57 acre Centre for Sport at Nestle Rowntree Park on Haxby Road, which will be ready for its new and returning students this September.

The six lane synthetic sprint track will provide a training venue for 100m, 110m hurdles and technique work for steeplechasers.

David Chesser, Pro Vice Chancellor for Resources at York St John University, said: “This fantastic new sports facility will be a great resource for our students and the sports community of York. We’re all enjoying the success of Team GB in London 2012, and our students and staff have been particularly inspired by how well the Yorkshire athletes are performing. By investing in these facilities, we hope to encourage even more students to get involved in sport, no matter what they’re studying at university.”

Work started on the sprint track 48 hours after the men’s 100m final in the Olympic Stadium and is due for completion in just under six weeks.  Plans to officially launch the new track include an open York St John University 100m championship at the beginning of the new term.
