Short film by York St John graduate to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival

While still at University he started writing the short war drama in his spare time and vowed to film it after finishing his course - filming started in August 2014 in his home county of Worcestershire.

The cast and crew include Game of Thrones’ Ross O’Hennessy and friends from York St John.

Calum then worked on the film and had the first trailer ready at the end of 2014, which helped him secure his job as a Video Production Assistant at corporate media firm DRP Group in Birmingham.

He worked on the film further, in post-production, throughout 2015, and decided to hold off releasing it and waited to enter Cannes in early 2016 and found out a month later that Our Father had been selected to feature at the festival.

He said: “As I’m sure you can imagine, I was pretty ecstatic!

 “I’ve been making short films ever since I was 11 years old, however it wasn’t until I went through University that I gained the confidence to undertake a project on a larger scale, like Our Father."

Calum studied Product Design at York St John and graduated in 2014.

He said: “Prior to University I had always focussed on two passions – film and design – and with a film A Level I decided to pursue design as my University subject. With Product Design I knew that even if that subject wasn’t going to be my final career choice, it would help me in the long run – and it did.

“Throughout the three years I learnt how to package a product, market it, brand it and broaden my knowledge, all of which have helped me in my own media-based projects.

“York St John also provided a great atmosphere for networking and making friends, not just with coursemates but those from other programmes too – I think York St John’s compact size makes this easy which has helped me a lot since I graduated. It provided such a great experience during studying and for starting my career.
